Licensed Log Scaler/Weighmaster

 

The Opportunity:

Canfor is currently seeking a Scaler/Weighmaster responsible for the Scaling programs at the Vavenby operations. This is a full-time position and a member of the Canfor Vavenby team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Receives and weighs logging truck loads on drive on platform scales.
  • Ensures each timber mark has proper load destination and further identifies the log stamp hammer mark.
  • Visually inspects each load for log quality and determines log grades as per MOF standards.
  • Selects stratum for each truck load of logs to determine species, percentage, and quality. Enters truck load data into computer and prepares daily computer reports on timber mark, contractor, stratum and log sort.
  • Scales sample loads
  • Performs log quality checks for defects in accordance with the log quality guide. Issues appropriate updated information to Truckers and Contractors.
  • Separates and provides the contractor’s copy of weight tickets to Contractors.
  • Verifies weight tickets against landing lists and identifies truck configurations.
  • Review and confirm accuracy of daily entry data and sample load data provided by Ministry of Forests on Harvest Billing System.
  • Scales several sample loads per day distributes quality information and digital pictures. Maintains platform scale in working order and performs a daily and weekly scale accuracy check. Maintains up to date and orderly file records of scale tickets, reports and other relevant documents.
  • Scales fifty pieces from sawmill scanner once per month or more often if necessary.
  • Identifies and reports truck driver and log yard safety infractions.
  • Ensures that landing slips are completed with correct land, timber marks and other information as required by MOF.
  • Dispatches loads to sort yard, processor yard, or log storage. Orders forms for suppliers and equipment.
  • Evaluates each truck load for quality and efficiency.

 

The Candidate:

 

  • Identifies problems with log quality and sorting.
  • Complete knowledge of B.C. scalers manual and Interior Grading manuals to ensure correct stratum selection takes place and correct sample scaling occurs.
  • Complete knowledge of Canfor log quality manual.
  • Calibrates and checks scale daily.
  • Candidates should have computer Proficiency, self-starter and have the ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Lifting up to 10lbs regularly, lifting 25lbs occasionally, and lifting up 50lbs as needed
  • Computer Proficiency
  • Experience with Scales, record keeping and logs
  • Log Quality identification experience
  • Knowledge of the forest industry
  • Knowledge and experience with a scale system is considered an asset
  • Valid B.C Driver’s License
  • Candidate must have a Scaler/Acting scaler license
