Mechanical Engineer – Biofuel Development


The Opportunity:
Canfor Pulp Ltd. is currently seeking a talented and enthusiastic engineer to undertake an exciting role with the Biofuel Development Project.  This is an opportunity to be involved with the development of a novel and innovative industrial technology that has the potential to make significant impacts on reducing carbon intensity and greenhouse gas emissions.

The Role:
The successful candidate will primarily work on site with the Biofuel Development Team  located in Prince George, but there will also be potential for offsite travel, as required. The candidate will work under the direction of the Engineering Manager Biofuel Development.  


Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Lead the advancement of specific project technical areas.
  • Analyze and implement design solutions in the development of the project to improve safety, productivity, quality, reliability, constructability, and profitability of the project.
  • Develop, conduct, and support programs to validate recommendations on economic and technical decisions regarding equipment selection and process design options.
  • Evaluate and work with technology for feedstock treatment, product and process stream treatment, and product quality optimization.
  • Evaluate literature and existing engineering knowledge as required to develop concepts and methods to validate design assumptions.
  • Solve technical problems with efficient solutions.
  • Support engineering consultants on the development of capital cost estimates.
  • Provide construction management support as the project transitions from design to implementation.
  • Provide guidance to transition applied research efforts to sound industrial application. 
  • Provide support for the biocrude project team, as required.


The Candidate:

  • Forward thinking, flexible and resourceful, you can apply your technical insight and analytical abilities to develop novel solutions.
  • You have graduated with a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics or Chemical Engineering and are eligible for registration with EGBC.
  • Previous practical experience working in an analytical laboratory, in the pulp industry, oil refining industry, biofuels, or with wood chemistry would be an assets as is the application of lab results to industrial situations.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic team environment.
  • Able to adapt quickly and change directions with the consideration of new data/information.
  • Able to make decisions and set best direction with the available and often limited data/information.
  • A strong ability to evaluate and optimize industrial processes using physical and indirect information gathering and analytic troubleshooting.
  • A strong academic background and understanding of engineering concepts with ability to perform calculations in the areas of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, et cetera.
  • You will also have a strong computer proficiency including experience with data management.
  • Possession of a class 5 driver’s license would be a desirable asset.
  • Your personal attributes include well developed interpersonal and communication skills, a creative yet pragmatic approach to problem solving and the ability to work in teams
