Manager, Sustainability & ESG Disclosures

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Enterprise Shared Services Controller, the Manager, Sustainability & ESG Disclosures will be responsible for Canfor’s sustainability & environmental, social & governance (“ESG”) disclosure. Reporting to the Enterprise Shared Services Controller and working closely with the Senior Director, Communications & Government Relations and Director, Environment & Sustainability, this role will be a part of Canfor’s strategic Environment & Sustainability Team, influencing the development of Canfor’s sustainability strategy and vision as the specialist in ESG disclosure. This role will be responsible for shaping the Company’s Sustainability and ESG disclosures, building out the data and processes necessary to support Canfor as a leader of Sustainability disclosure. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage technical alignment of annual sustainability report (in collaboration with Canfor’s Communication team) to best practices and international standards.
  • Manage sustainability disclosures within investor and regulatory filings (e.g. annual reports) and in response to customer and shareholder information requests.
  • Manage ESG assessment responses with ESG rating agencies and sustainability indices.
  • Provide cross-functional management and coordination of working committees and action plans that support sustainability reporting to senior executives and external audiences.
  • Monitor trends and best practices in sustainability disclosures and recommend and manage approaches to support the Company’s leadership in sustainability disclosures.
  • Benchmark Canfor’s strategies, results and performance in regards to ESG with competition and industry best practices.
  • Document processes and policies that support the collection and management of metrics necessary to efficiently report on sustainability objectives.
  • Support data collection, quality assurance and quality control on quantitative and qualitative KPIs related to Canfor’s sustainability material topics and carbon inventory.
  • Research and analyze disclosure requirements under Global Reporting Initiative (“GRI”), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (“SASB”) and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (“TCFD”) frameworks to support Canfor’s ESG disclosures.
  • Collection and consolidation of metrics and data used to support ESG KPIs.
  • Work closely with Finance and IT, improve data gathering and integrated systems reporting for ESG data.
  • Contribute as an active member of working group for implementation of Environment, Health & Safety system.
  • Work in a team environment with various disciplines and departments represented.
  • Build a strong rapport with internal stakeholders and maintain their confidence while ensuring their key sustainability data is accurately reflected and disclosed.

 

The Candidate:

 

Education & Experience

  • This position requires experience with GRI, SASB and TCFD standards, well-established organizational skills, a high level of motivation and energy, excellent communication skills and a desire to work in a dynamic team environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree or master in business, sustainability management, finance, accounting or equivalent.
  • 5 years’ experience in the field of finance, accounting, and/or disclosures.
  • Advanced understanding of ESG frameworks and data analysis, including GRI, SASB and TCFD; familiarity with UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).
  • Knowledge in the areas of sustainability reporting and disclosure, including materiality assessment and stakeholder engagement, ESG rating agencies and metrics used to assess a company’s ESG objectives and disclosure.
  • Experience in trend analysis, forecasting, and scenario analysis.
  • Forestry or Energy, Resources & Industrial industry experience an asset.

  • High degree of interpersonal and communication proficiency, including written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Business acumen with an understanding of economics.
  • Capable of understanding the big picture and strategic context.
  • Ability to influence, facilitate and engage departments, functions, and managers.
