The Opportunity

The Accountant will be responsible for a wide range of accounting transactions; banking, payroll, general ledger and administrative functions split between Sales accounting team and Corporate Selling & Administration accounting team.

 

Key Responsibilities 

Month-End

  • Preparation and processing of standard Corporate & Sales journal entries and posting of multi-divisional journal entries from operations, various Head Office departments and Sales
  • Preparation and review of financial statements and support, including balance sheet account reconciliations and variance analyses 
  • Reconciliation of global sub-ledgers for AR and Inventory:
    • Reviewing unrealized income and valuation of inventory for lower of cost/market at period ends
    • Reviewing inventory ledger for accuracy and sensibility down to the product SKU level
  • Preparation and review of monthly transportation package
  • Management of prior leg freight and transfer pricing in JDE
    • Ensuring the system has reasonable and sensible rates is essential to providing proper mill net and net revenue results
  • Reconciliation of inter and intra company accounts, globally

Forecast

  • Preparation and analysis of quarterly forecasts

Analyses

  • Provide the Corporate Finance team and certain Corporate Head Office divisions with relevant financial and statistical analysis and information
  • Identify relevant trends and raise appropriately with stakeholders
  • Weekly and monthly standard finance reports for Canada and the US
  • Ad-hoc reports to support a variety of requests from business analysts and Corporate

General

  • Liaison with key Business and Operations partners, working collaboratively on forecast as well as various ad-hoc initiatives
  • Maintenance of files on banking transactions and preparation of bank reconciliations
  • Fixed asset accounting
  • Preparation of tax filings
  • Detailed understanding of Advanced Pricing in JD Edwards and the concepts deployed for pricing lumber and EWP products, transfer pricing, allocation of overhead costs and distribution of freight
  • Play a lead role in standardizing, streamlining, and simplifying reporting, account recs, etc., and enhancing the financial information made available to various business units and stakeholders
  • Records management
  • Assistance in maintaining Corporate & Sales Accounting policies and ensure compliance with policies and IFRS
  • Back up and support to other positions within the finance shared services team
  • Assist Senior Corporate Analyst & Manager, Accounting – Sales Finance as required
  • Ad-hoc projects as assigned

 

Required Skills

  • Qualified Accountant (CPA, CA, CMA or CGA)
  • A strong understanding of IFRS and Public Company reporting requirements an asset
  • Three to four years related experience
  • Experience with corporate tier ERP and/or accounting software an asset
  • Ability to think outside of the box with a value-add mindset

  • Detail oriented, analytical, highly motivated, and a self-starter
  • Strong team player and relentless work ethic
  • Time management and ability to manage multiple time sensitive tasks
  • Strong understanding of complex accounting principles with the ability to appropriately interpret and communicate its relevance in financial reporting, analysis, and decision making
  • Leads and manages month-end close process and is accountable for accuracy & reliability
  • Strong understanding of internal Finance policies and procedures
  • Ability to apply the appropriate tools and systems to find, extract and analyze required data
  • Strong understanding of end to end business processes and principles of financial process controls and risk management
  • Understanding of external reporting requirements, standards, and policies
  • Understanding of relevant legal, regulatory and compliance issues
  • Ability to adapt to changes in current policies and processes due to new guidelines
  • Strong understanding and awareness of key stakeholders and at appropriate senior levels to drive support for project/initiative and ability to adapt to their needs
