The Director, Manufacturing Technology is responsible for the strategic direction and management of the IT manufacturing systems and infrastructure delivery teams, overseeing the planning, delivery and evolution of Canfor’s manufacturing technology and services to ensure that high levels of service, customer satisfaction and productivity are maintained across all regions. 


They will also build and maintain relationships across regional and corporate sites at both management and executive levels to fully understand business and production requirements, championing their translation into highly effective solutions and services. In addition, this role facilitates the exploration of future technologies to be sourced, engineered and delivered as business facing services in support of Canfor’s Digital Strategy and will also plan and forecast financial, physical, and human resources to meet established plans and objectives.


Key Responsibilities


Planning and Delivery:

  • Develop a manufacturing technology roadmap with corresponding project plans to ensure the evolution of mill IT systems and infrastructure and to support evolving business needs through the use of existing and new digital technologies and process models
  • Investigate and propose high level technical recommendations to ensure that the solutions designed by collaborating technical teams best meet the requirements of Canfor operations
  • Collaborate with Lumber, Pulp and Woodlands management and executive across Canada, the US and Europe to build productive relationships and ensure the efficient and secure integration of IT and OT solutions.
  • Plan and oversee the implementation of IT infrastructure and services, including PC, server, networking, telephony, mobility, videoconferencing and endpoint related services to all Canfor regional sites.
  • Plan and oversee the implementation of Lumber, Pulp and Woodlands IT systems, e.g. data historians, management information systems, procurement systems, environmental, health and safety systems.
  • Ensure that solutions adhere to cost, quality and schedule constraints; identifying technical, resource and financial efficiencies wherever possible.
  • Ensure that physical and cyber security related policies and controls relating to IT infrastructure and services are diligently followed and advocated by IT delivery staff.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with strategic partners, vendors and service providers to identify and evaluate products and services.
  • Establish a culture of innovation, collaboration, communication and quality – creating processes for business and cross IT relationship management, initiative prioritization, handover and continuous improvement.



  • Drive a culture of knowledge sharing and information management to enable high levels of support by the IT organization and enable on-going maintenance and improvement of Canfor infrastructure and systems
  • In cooperation with the technical, support and cybersecurity teams, identify and develop policies, processes and procedures to ensure timely maintenance of contracts and assets.
  • Uphold and advocate for Canfor Service Management policies and procedures within the IT delivery team and with business stakeholders.
  • In cooperation with business management teams, develop key performance indicators, reporting and communication models to ensure customer satisfaction and operational excellence at Canfor sites.


Purchasing and Contracts:

  • Negotiate and manage large scale IT hardware, software and service contracts with external service providers and vendors to ensure services are delivered as specified.
  • Review, monitor, and ensure vendor performance to meet the agreed deliverables and service levels.
  • Lead and/or oversee the selection and purchase of IT infrastructure related hardware, software and services.
  • Manage and maintain contracts, assets, licenses and maintenance agreements.


Administration and Management:

  • Manage the overall Canfor Manufacturing Technology team, including the IT Infrastructure Delivery and Manufacturing Systems Managers, Team Leads, analysts and specialists including recruitment, supervision and performance management.
  • Develop and maintain operating and capital program and project budgets across Canada and the US.


The Candidate



  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field.  Or equivalent combination of education and work experience.



  • 15 or more years of IT and business/industry work experience including system/service design and deployment, infrastructure planning, project management, site operations and IT service management.
  • 10 or more years of leadership experience in managing cross-functional teams or projects, and influencing key stakeholders including senior and executive management.
  • Knowledge and experience of cloud and on-premise server infrastructure, local and wide area networking, mobile and desktop services, development, implementation and sustainment of highly integrated enterprise and industrial platforms, including ERP, MIS and PLC Control systems.
  • Experience using managed services providers and contractors for key functions and staff augmentation
  • Experience in organizing and leading effective teams
  • Working knowledge of ITSM best practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
