Director, Enterprise Analytics

The Opportunity:

The Enterprise Analytics function at Canfor has a vision to deliver data, information, and tools to employees at all operating levels and across all business lines to support decision-making that drives operational efficiency, product diversification and innovation. The Director, Enterprise Analytics is responsible for the leadership of the data governance, and analytics platform groups. This includes the leadership of a team of Solution Architects, and Data Analysts responsible for architecting, designing, and implementing analytics solutions that meet business objectives.


Specifically, the Director, Enterprise Analytics is responsible for:

  1. Data Governance: The development of a governance framework that defines the ownership, accessibility, security, quality and knowledge of data and analytics at Canfor.
  2. Analytics Platforms: Design, development, and implementation of a technical architecture to support advanced analytics.
  3. Team Management & Business Collaboration: Building Teams, Resource planning, performance management and employee development of the Enterprise Analytics team.
  4. Development of a Data & Analytics Centre of Excellence to drive innovation, collaboration, and partnerships across the organization


Key Responsibilities:

Data Governance

  • Establishes and implements data governance framework that guides data quality management throughout the organization. For example, Data must be well-defined to be sharable beyond a specific task.
  • Establish an enterprise data governance implementation roadmap
  • Define roles and responsibilities related to data governance and ensure clear accountability for stewardship of Canfor’s data
  • Develop and maintain inventory of enterprise data including definition of owner, systems and data
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of data quality standards, data protection standards and adoption requirements across the enterprise
  • Define and report on indicators of performance and quality metrics and ensure compliance with data related policies, standards, roles and responsibilities, and adoption requirements


Analytics Platform

  • Own the delivery of high-impact analytics and dashboards
  • Partner with business leaders to understand their data needs and challenges, and create, define, and execute a rigorous roadmap for new data analytics projects and infrastructure
  • Data management oversees data management, data architecture, data acquisition, data warehousing, data access, tooling, reporting, visualization, and publishing practices.
  • Provide oversight of the Analytics Solution Architect for new and enhancements to the Business Intelligence and Analytics technical solution and ensure alignment with the IT Strategy
  • Define the future state advanced analytics platform vision and develop an implementation roadmap
  • Research and analyze best practices, industry trends and new products and services to define the Analytics Architecture future state. This includes leading the definition of requirements, guiding principles and tools to support the Analytics Architecture
  • Evaluate emerging artificial intelligence technologies including machine learning, predictive analytics, pattern recognition and smart data discovery


Team Management and Business Collaboration

  • Champion a data-driven culture at Canfor that help drive key strategic decisions by being a catalyst; bring the right people together, create a structure where teams can effectively execute projects.
  • Hire and grow team members in Data Science, Data Analysis, Analytics Engineering, and Data Engineering.
  • Develops employee knowledge, capacity, capability & performance in the Enterprise Analytics team.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders, develop, and apply a deep understanding of the business to assess programs, prioritize initiatives, determine the impact of actions, and influence meaningful change. Initiates and facilitates meaningful discussion across the organization around business intelligence, data governance, and business planning.
  • Coordinate with business systems project managers and IT managers to ensure the appropriate participation from the Enterprise Analytics team in projects and to understand resource requirements for those projects
  • Actively fosters a growing business analyst community and provide clean, reliable, standardized data models for business analysis. Support the BI and analysis tools used by the business analysts.
  • Manage projects to budget, scope and timeline
  • Plan and meet operational budget
  • Provide input into capital plans and develop business case, as required, for capital investment projects
  • Facilitate and oversee the research, evaluation and selection of hardware and software technology and product standards, as well as the desig


The Candidate:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, business management or specialized training/certification in Data analysis or data science
  • 10+ years management in a technical leadership role focused on data and software engineering experience.
  • 6+ years of leading data/analytical teams with 3+ years of managing a data platform with data ingestion, transformation, and storage components.
  • Knowledge of industry leading data quality and data protection management practices
  • Knowledge of data governance practices, business and technology issues related to management of enterprise information assets and approaches related to data protection
  • Lumber/pulp/paper industry experience is an asset
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning, transportation and operational systems is an asset (i.e. JDE, OTM)
  • Experience leveraging modern cloud-based data and analytical platforms is an asset


Skills & Abilities

  • Track record of creating a large-scale scalable data platform in data-intensive environments and determining third-party technologies to integrate into the technology stack.
  • Experience building high-performance teams, partnering with Talent Acquisition teams
  • A strong network and high level of participation in the Data Science/Engineering community
  • Ability to get the most out of your team by providing strong technical leadership, clear direction, and motivation
  • In-depth understanding of data infrastructure, data governance and best practices
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills proven by delivering projects on time, budget and within scope
  • Negotiates, and handles multiple and shifting priorities with ease
  • Strong focus on the customer and a clear understanding of the customer problems we're leveraging technology to solve
  • Excellent verbal, listening and written communication skills and experience working across departments to drive action.
  • Communicates ideas, both technical and solution focused, in an easy to understand language
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong aptitude for collaborating with others and experience driving large transformational organizational, culture, and technical changes.
  • Strategic thinker with a strong technical grounding and the ability to receive input from many data points and determine a clear plan of action.
