Canfor is seeking a Communications Co-op student who is curious, engaged and demonstrates an interest in public affairs, policy development, and/or government relations to join our dynamic team for a 4–8 month term. This role offers hands-on experience in content creation, community relations, communications planning, and public affairs. You will contribute to meaningful projects that shape both internal and external communications across the organization and support initiatives that advance our reputation and community presence.

 

As a Communications Intern, you will work closely with the Vice President, Corporate Affairs, and the broader communications team to support and execute strategic initiatives that support our corporate priorities. Your responsibilities may include supporting community relations and government outreach, researching key issues, drafting briefing notes, and creating engaging written content for various audiences.

 

You will also assist with project management and planning activities across the Corporate Affairs team, developing presentations and briefing materials, and supporting communications research. In addition, you may help plan and support corporate events, community engagement initiatives, and internal communications programs. The team is focused on strengthening internal and external communications while fostering community awareness and positive stakeholder relationships.

 

A Day in the life of the Communications Intern includes:

  • Write content for internal and external audiences, including articles, briefing notes, and summary reports.
  • Support the development of communications plans for specific initiatives.
  • Assist the internal communications team with employee communications and social media content, aligned with the corporate brand and established social media strategy.
  • Support community relations activities, event coordination and support for Canfor’s “Good Things Come From Trees” community giving program
  • Conduct research, media monitoring, and issue tracking.
  • Perform project coordination tasks, including maintaining a communications calendar.

 

For this role, you’ll come equipped with:

  • Currently Enrolled: Pursuing a degree in communications, political science, media studies,  public policy, journalism, , or a related field.
  • Excellent Writing Skills: Able to produce clear, concise, and engaging content tailored to different audiences and platforms.
  • Organized & Detail-Oriented: Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Curious & Engaged: A strong interest in understanding how policy and regulatory environments intersect with business and community. .
  • Tech-Savvy: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) with basic layout and editing skills.
  • Creative & Adaptable: A strong problem-solver with an interest in storytelling and visual communication.
  • Approachable & Collaborative: Comfortable working with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Proactive and self-directed: Able to take initiative and ownership of tasks and independently manage project requests.
  • Experience with tools such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Excel, Canva or PowerPoint.
  • Experience supporting communications, public policy, student government, nonprofit, or community organization projects.
  • Industry knowledge or familiarity with resource-based industries.
  • Previous experience in a communications or related role.

 

The salary range for this position is: $42,000.00-$60,000.00 per year. This salary would be pro-rated for the time you are working.
