Reporting to the General Manager, Central Operations, the Plant Manager will be responsible for the effective start up and profitable management of sawmill operations at the Thomasville, GA facility. They must uphold Canfor’s core value of Safety First in every aspect of leading the Thomasville Plant.  The individual selected will have strong leadership competencies, with 10+ years of success in manufacturing operations, preferably in a sawmill or wood processing operation. They will have excellent communication and problem-solving skills along with the ability to establish a strong operational culture. 



Operational Duties and Responsibilities: 


  • Provide leadership for safety by ensuring the management team and everyone on-site treats the safety of all employees and contractors as a core value and requirement of doing business.
  • Strive for an injury free environment through strict safety adherence of all policies and regulations and employee accountability.
  • Meet or exceed key performance metrics of the greenfield project plan including productivity and quality expectations.
  • Efficiently and effectively manage the sawmill operations to maximize profitability, and reduce unnecessary costs.
  • Ensure products manufactured meet or exceed customer needs and company quality requirements by putting quality assurance measures and sustainment plans in place.
  • Provide outstanding leadership in a motivational style to all direct reports and employees, and challenge them to surpass normal expectations.
  • Forecast and plan for the mill’s ongoing operational needs, including technology, facilities, equipment and manpower.
  • Utilize Human Capital to the utmost potential by supporting their continuous improvement through training and development.
  • Ensure that Canfor values are demonstrated by every employee.
  • Constantly strive for continuous improvement through lean manufacturing, team building and systems improvement.
  • Actively share and solicit ideas from other mills to maximize Company wide teamwork and profitability initiatives.



Financial Duties and Responsibilities: 


  • Ensure accurate production and financial reports are distributed on a timely basis to Corporate personnel.
  • Ensure that the mill assets are adequately safeguarded from loss and Company policies are adhered to.
  • Work with the plant controller to prepare all annual budgets, forecasts and strategic plans.
  • Ensure capital budget requests are adequately justified and that all monies are prudently allocated in the most value added method possible. 



Other Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Represent the company at all times in a professional manner.
  • Ensure that the sales and marketing efforts are supported at the mill level.
  • Monitor and work to improve customer service at all levels of mill operations.
  • Provide leadership by communicating well, maintaining good business relationships, and representing the mill in a positive light through community and various trade associations.
  • Work with and support plant and Corporate Human Resources to ensure policies and procedures are effectively adhered to.
  • Ensure employee training, evaluation, safety, and personnel systems are established in accordance with company standards.
  • Monitor “key indicators” in the Human Resource area and plan for improvement as needed.
