Operational Specialist, Steam & Recovery

As the Operational Specialist for Steam & Recovery you are responsible for the safe, efficient and environmentally compliant operation of the Steam & Recovery Department.  You play a pivotal role supporting the area team along with the overall upkeep and performance for your respective area and adherence to area KPI's.

 

This role will find you collaborating with Operational Leadership and other stakeholder groups. You will promote a healthy and safe working environment and support the upkeep of critical training documents, SOP's, and KPI's in the areas of cost, safety, troubleshooting, lockouts and lost opportunities. Working with the shift supervisors, planners and technical specialists you will help to drive process capability and efficiencies across your area.

 

A day in the life of an Operational Specialist will include: 

Safety/Housekeeping:

  • Provides direction to Operations for required housekeeping for area operations and maintenance activities.
  • Owns/upkeeps area JSA and CSHA documentation.
  • Owns/upkeeps area SOP documentation.
  • Owns/upkeeps all area lockout documentation.

 

 

Communications

  • Communicates with OMC and Operations using predictive/preventative process knowledge to enable both planned and unplanned maintenance activities with minimal upstream and downstream operational impact.
  • Communicates directly with the Shift Supervisor and Operators to eliminate delays with the shutdown and start-up of equipment and processes in their respective area. This is inclusive of daily, area shut, and TA activities.
  • Communicates directly with all area stakeholders to identify process constraints within the area and determine operational solutions.
  • Documents and communicates process deviations/bypasses to all area stake holders. Determines how and when to execute best practice restart plans with Operations.

 

Assists in managing the operations workflow:

  • Continuous Improvement of the Steam & Recovery operations.
  • Determines operational requirements into, during, and out of area break-in and scheduled downtime.
  • Planning, execution, and follow-up of major mill shut downs.
  • Owns/upkeeps area shut down and start-up check lists.
  • Owns and tracks area consumable inventory requirements.
    • Liaisons with vendors/suppliers/purchasing.
  • Coordinates external support services and ancillary resources for area operational requirements.
  • Is knowledgeable in regulatory body regulations and requirements for their respective area.
  • Understands and regularly reviews business unit cash conversion costs.
  • Responsible for understanding all internal and external customer requirements.
  • Clearly communicates standard process expectations to Operations in order to develop shift to shift repeatability.
  • Assists Technical/Engineering in identifying process constraints for capital project development.

 

Work Scope:

  • Assures that IRIS routes are a top priority, working with Operations to optimize the application.
  • Communicates and coordinates all production requirements and activities with OMC, Shift Supervisors, Area Manager and other affected stakeholders.
  • Ensure Shift Supervisors and Operators are actively involved with setting and achieving all short term and long- term KPIs/targets.
  • Development, implementation and documentation of all lockouts and SOPs.
  • Work with operators daily to achieve all KPIs/targets.
  • Tracks lost opportunities in their respective area, focusing on root cause to identify and eliminate process constraints and challenges.
  • Engaging Operators to be part of the solution to issues within their process.
  • Actively participates in coaching, developing and training Shift Supervisors and Operators.
  • Works with technical to develop and improve testing procedures.
  • Review and communicate ISO procedures.
  • Actively participates in all area outage/shutdown activities.

 

 

What you will have

  • You are equipped with a B.C. or Interprovincial 1st Class Power Engineering certificate or have your 2nd Class Power Engineering certificate and are working towards your 1st Class certificate.
  • Several years' Kraft mill experience would be ideal, but experience in a similar role is sufficient.
  • Proven leadership, communication and interpersonal skills along with the ability to effectively manage people in a team environment.

 

 

 

The salary range for this position is: $102,550.00-$146,500.00
