Supervisor, Occupational Health & Safety

 

The Opportunity:
Canfor is currently looking for an experienced and motivated individual with a background in safety and Pulpmill experience to join us as an Occupational Health & Safety Supervisor.

The Role:

The Safety Supervisor works primarily in a mill operating environment but is expected to also perform office work. In this role, you will generally work Monday - Thursday, for a 10-hour shift although flexibility and overtime is required.
During mill turn-arounds, or when there are safety issues that require immediate resolve, long work hours are required. Carrying a cell phone to be available in emergencies is required.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day to day management of the Safety Advisors to ensure the development of effective health & safety
  • Provide liaison with WorkSafeBC and other appropriate regulating bodies
  • Maintain Canfor Pulp and corporate policies and procedures related to all safety aspects
  • Seek out and review best practices to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Ensure plant protection and emergency response capabilities are maintained
  • Coordinate formal incident analysis to investigate accidents, near misses, confined space and lockout violations as required
  • Represent the company on various professional and advisory committees as required
  • Collect and assess data (for example, incidents or illness, injury) to identify trends and work with managers/staff, joint occupational health & safety committees to develop tools and analyze trends and develop awareness and corrective actions
  • Arrange for and, in some cases, deliver training programs related to safety legislation and program implementation for employees at all levels of the organization
  • Act as a member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee
  • Establish a standardized approach to analytical reporting
  • Develop a knowledgeable, effective safety team and promote a learning environment that encourages acquisition of new skills and competencies on a tri-mill scale
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationship with the two Unifor Locals and PPWC
  • Responsible for the supervision and overseeing the schedule of the Safety Advisors
  • Provide support to Team Leaders and Supervisors in the area of safety, emergency preparedness, loss prevention and compliance training to maintain a safe work environment and prevent the injury of workers
  • Coordinate mill emergency evacuation procedures and conduct periodic emergency evacuation practices
  • Dayshift support role in health & safety department
  • Tri-mill coverage as needed for Turnarounds and Projects
  • Flexible coverage between mills for optimal developmental opportunities

 

Required Skills:

The Occupational Health & Safety Supervisor needs the following:

  • Degree, diploma or certification in a field related to safety management
  • CRSP designation an asset
  • Minimum of 5 years in industrial, unionized workplaces with experience in recovery management related disciplines
  • Strong understanding of relevant safety legislation and case law
  • Ability to work independently and to lead and work co-operatively with others
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Interpersonal and negotiation skills required to settle disputes
  • Ability to facilitate change
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
