Canfor’s tree seedling nursery, JD Little Forest Centre, produces 9 million conifer seedlings annually for reforestation throughout Canfor’s operating areas in BC’s northern interior.  The nursery is a modern facility located in Prince George, comprised of 24 glass and poly greenhouses along with a cold storage facility. 


The Opportunity:

This is a 10 month position and the successful candidate will be a team member of the Silviculture department within the Forest Management Group.


Key Responsibilities:

  • As a member of the Silviculture team your responsibilities will include the following: 
  • Assist in the coordination, supervision, and training of the nursery’s union workforce during sowing, thinning/weeding, blackout, lifting, and shipping.  Some evening supervision work will be required during 2 weeks during March sow, 8 weeks during October/November lift, 3 weeks during blackout in July. 
  • Assist with contractor scheduling and coordination.
  • Assist in maintaining the highest standards of safety at all times, leading by example and ensuring all employees follow policies, procedures and practices
  • Assist in identifying opportunities to reduce cost, while safely meeting production targets.
  • Assist in the hiring workers at the nursery.
  • Assist with managing the facility’s 24hr monitoring systems.  Requires periods of being on call.
  • Assist with the nursery’s preventative maintenance program.
  • Assist with the FMG Silviculture program during slower periods of nursery operations. 
  • Documentation and record keeping. 
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects to ensure operations are safe, cost effective, and streamlined.
  • Foster a culture of open communication with employees at all levels.



  • Higher level education related to horticulture, greenhouse crop production, forestry, agriculture or botany.  Previous hands on experience may be considered in absence of higher level education. 
  • 5th Class (or higher) power engineering certification or willing to pursue as part of the role. 
  • Highly motivated individual with strong initiative.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to create and work within a team environment.
  • Capable of working independently, setting and meeting targets.
  • Experience managing/supervising staff.
  • Excellent computer skills.  Proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience or training in mechanics, fabrication, construction, plumbing, or electrical would be an asset.
  • Experience working in a union environment would be an asset.
