Director, Technical Excellence

Reporting to the VP Operations and Innovation, the Director of Technical Excellence will work closely with Canfor Pulp Mill General Managers, operations, sales and marketing teams.  Responsible for the oversight of quality, process technology, technical services environmental and customer service, this role is a senior leadership position and an integral part of driving technical excellence through the operations and to the customers. 

 

Responsibilities:

Quality

  • Coordinate with the Customer Service Manager on matters relating to the ISO systems
  • Develop and support quality improvement initiatives
  • Key contributor in development of annual budgets, business plans and capital projects relevant to product quality
  • Monitor all process changes which may affect pulp quality

 

Process Technology

  • Providing technical leadership in support of programs, business needs, challenges and performance optimization
  • Driver of product management of the technical attributes of our pulp and paper products
  • Review production processes, identifying and correcting problems in conjunction with production
  • Evaluate alternatives and develop process control strategies/recommend best practical solutions to improve productivity, quality and profitability

 

Environmental

  • Leadership and support to the Environmental Manager and group ensuring resources are in place to prevent upsets and to maintain full compliance with regulatory and CPL policy as well as ISO management. 
  • Ensure that CPL maintains a positive working relationship with the community, government and other stakeholders
  • Maintain awareness of current and pending legislation and participate in regulatory and policy development initiatives
  • Supervise environmental staff members located at the three pulp mills

 

Customer Service

  • Leadership and support to the Customer Service Manager ensuring that product quality and specifications are maintained to both internal and external standards.
  • Accountable for ISO Management for Canfor Pulp with responsible oversight of the maintenance of the Quality Management systems.

 

Qualifications/Skills & Abilities:

  • Credentials include an advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in an engineering or science discipline relevant to pulp and paper, combined with at least 10 years’ experience in the pulp and paper industry.
  • Leadership or Management experience desired with the ability to influence without direct management responsibility.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and handle multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of service to clients in a deadline driven environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with and work effectively with diverse groups of people, managing conflict and negotiating for results when needed.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and initiative; ability to work well both independently and with others.
  • Strong detail orientation with high level of organizational skills and ability to multi-task, managing interruptions with multiple projects.
  • A strong ability to effectively communicate technical information to technical and non-technical people is important, as is a willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills
  • The ability to develop strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

  • CPL Senior Leadership to include, General Managers, Operations, Sales and Marketing Teams
  • Canfor corporate Support including HR, Finance, Communications, Legal and Information Services.
  • Divisional dayto-day customers including Operations, Engineering and Maintenance Leaders.

 

Outside the company:

  • Customers, Vendors, Audit & Compliance
