Safety Manager Job Description

Canfor Southern Pine is seeking a motivated, experienced individual to join our company as a Safety Health Manger at our DeRidder Louisiana facility. As a member of our safety team, you will examine and audit existing working conditions, equipment, processes, and systems to determine points of potential hazard and opportunities for better safety practices. You will develop and implement safe working processes, educating all levels of staff on best practices and appropriate equipment usage, as well as make recommendations for equipment upgrades or replacement as necessary. Our ideal candidate has at least a bachelor's degree in occupational safety, engineering, or a relevant field. You must also have excellent communication and leadership skills and a thorough understanding of industry regulatory requirements.


Safety Manager Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a high-level understanding of workplace processes and equipment to best discern opportunities for improvement and the elimination of unsafe conditions
  • Educate all levels of staff, including leadership, on best practices and proper equipment usage
  • Survey equipment and facilities, identifying potentially unsafe conditions and implementing remedial processes
  • Provide training to leadership staff regarding safety regulatory requirements and changes
  • Investigate accidents, facilitate root cause analysis, report findings, and develop corrective actions for all accidents occurring at the facility.
  • Track, trend, and report leading indicators to Deridder’s management team.
  • Manage workers compensation claims with the assistance of the insurance carrier
  • Assets with the development and implementation of corporate safety projects as needed.
  •  Facilitate government Inspections not limited to but including fire Marshall(s), OSHA, state Health departments, etc.
  • Conduct health & safety new hire orientation for all employees.
  • Maintain OSHA logs, and electronic submission.
  • Utilize the Enablon incident reporting and tracking system for the site.


Safety Manager Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, engineering, mathematics, sciences, or a relevant field

3-5 years’ OH&S experience in a heavy manufacturing environment, (Oil and Gas, Sawmill, Steel, Pulp Paper, etc.)

Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills

Excellent leadership ability and experience leading training workshops or seminars


Preferred Professional Qualifications:

Board Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional, or equivalent

Construction Safety & Health Technician


Travel Requirements:

This position will require limited travel > 20%.
