The position:


The student will be working with the pulp and paper research team, investigating processes for the delignification of wood and the conversion of pulp into paper.  There are several projects that the student may be involved with under the supervision of the respective project leaders. These include kraft pulping, refining, papermaking, oxygen delignification, ECF (elemental chlorine free) bleaching, and evaluation of alternative or novel bleaching technologies to the present mill processes. 


The student's responsibilities will include experimental design, execution of laboratory trials, data analysis and reporting on specific aspects of the particular research project(s).  The work will be a combination of team based and individual tasks in a laboratory and pilot plant setting. 



Required skills:


  • Enrolled in a Chemistry, Engineering or other Science program at a Canadian university.
  • Laboratory experience is an asset.
  • Strong PC skills required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.


NSERC Eligibility is preferred for this position

NSERC Eligibility:

  • CPGA 2.67+
  • A Canadian citizen
  • Have completed a minimum of 9+ credits in the semester prior to their work term
  • Max. Three NSERCs awarded in an undergraduate career


What you’ll be doing:


  • Problem solving involving equipment and investigating customer queries
  • Simulation of mill processes in the laboratory.
  • Operation of a pilot scale refiner, hand sheet preparation and testing according to TAPPI standard procedures
  • Improving existing mill processes and pulp quality as well as reducing environmental impacts
  • Supporting the development of new products in coordination with the marketing department.
