AXIS SAWMILL

POSITION: Sawmill Log crane Operator

 

SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION

To unload log trucks and place logs in inventory. Also, to keep the stem deck supplied with logs.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibilities of the Log Crane Operator include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Operate cranes and hoists: Safely control the movement of cranes and hoists.
  • Transfer loads: Transfer logs from log trucks and place in inventory. Als, keep stem deck supplied with logs.
  • Inspect equipment: Regularly inspect machinery and equipment for safety compliance.
  • Maintenance and activity logs: Keep accurate records of maintenance activities and daily operations.
  • Basic repairs: Perform basic repairs on machines as needed.
  • Set up machinery: Follow complex manuals to set up machinery correctly.
  • Coordinate with ground operators: Work closely with ground personnel and interpret hand and verbal signals.
  • Follow safety guidelines: Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines.

Safety

  • Proper lockout procedures should be used when servicing any equipment.
  • Personal protective equipment should be worn when outside the log crane cab.
  • Operate the log crane from the operator’s seat only.
  • Only transport loads that the weight is properly distributed.
  • Make sure all logs are balanced before removing the lift.
  • Never lift a load over a person and never let anyone walk under a load.

Quality Assurance

  • Avoid damaging logs.
  • Report any log quality issues to your supervisor or quality control.

Housekeeping

  • Keep the cab of the log crane clean.

Maintenance

  • At the beginning of the shift, visually check the equipment to make sure it is in proper condition. Also, perform and fill out daily check sheets to verify the safe and efficient operation of the equipment.
  • You may be instructed to assist in cleaning up as directed by supervision.

Requirements and Skills

  • Previous experience: Prior experience as a crane operator or in a similar role.
  • Handling different types of cranes: Familiarity with various crane types.
  • Physical abilities: Ability to lift heavy loads, work at heights, and stand for extended periods.
  • Attention to detail: Accuracy and precision in executing tasks.
  • Pass drug, and background checks: Must meet safety requirements.
